Training Camp in Italy

by Jay Hakkinen / June 16, 2009

Over the past two weeks I was training in Antholz, Italy in order to work with the new US Biathlon National Team Coach Armin Auchentaler and get some altitude training. Armin was a former Italian coach and just joined the team in May so this was the first time I had the chance to work with him.
The training was very tough, but I was especially pleased with my improvements in shooting. Every morning Armin and I worked very precisely on my technique.
In the afternoons we did some pretty nice but intense biking workouts. Armin is a strong biker and knows all the roads and trails up the Dolomites around Antholz so he took me on some scenic tours. We even road up to the legendary Kronplatz, which was a part of the 2008 Giro d Italia.
The accommodations at the Hotel Seehaus were ideal, right at the top of the valley by the lake. Waking up to such a beautiful view and having excellent Italian food really made it a great training camp.
Now I will settle into my training routine based in Oberhof, where I will continue building up my base for the Olympics.
I’ll keep you posted.
